What Custom Instructions do
ChatGPT Custom Instructions are a set of persistent guidelines that apply to every new conversation. Instead of re-explaining "I have ADHD, keep it short, don't lecture me" every time, you set it once and ChatGPT remembers.
For ADHD brains, this is a game-changer. It eliminates the setup friction that prevents you from using AI when you need it most — in the moment you're stuck.
How to set it up (2 minutes)
1 Open Custom Instructions
In ChatGPT, click your profile icon (bottom left) > Settings > Personalization > Custom Instructions. You'll see two text boxes.
2 Fill in "What would you like ChatGPT to know about you?"
Copy and paste this into the first box:
3 Fill in "How would you like ChatGPT to respond?"
Copy and paste this into the second box:
4 Save and test
Click Save. Start a new conversation and type something like "I can't start my taxes and I've been avoiding them for 3 weeks." You should get a short, direct response with one action — not a 10-paragraph lecture.
Why each instruction matters
"ONE action at a time"
ADHD brains can't process multiple options without decision paralysis. One action = one decision = movement.
"Never pep-talk me"
When you're frozen, "You've got this!" feels patronizing. You don't need encouragement. You need the next step.
"Boring explanation first"
When RSD activates, your brain writes catastrophe stories. The boring explanation (they forgot, they're busy, it's not about you) is the antidote.
"Treat my messages as brain dumps"
ADHD communication is messy. You'll send incomplete thoughts, skip context, and change topics mid-sentence. The instruction tells ChatGPT to work with the mess instead of asking clarifying questions that feel like homework.
Advanced: Custom GPTs for ADHD
If you have ChatGPT Plus, you can create a Custom GPT — a persistent AI persona with instructions baked in. Unlike Custom Instructions (which are global), a Custom GPT is a separate "app" you can open when you need ADHD-specific help.
You can use the same instructions above as the Custom GPT's system prompt. The advantage: you can have a general-purpose ChatGPT AND an ADHD-specific one, without the ADHD instructions affecting every conversation.
The limit of Custom Instructions
Custom Instructions make ChatGPT better for ADHD. But they don't solve the prompt design problem — knowing exactly what to say when you're in a specific ADHD moment (paralysis, overwhelm, RSD, time blindness).
That's where pre-written, situation-specific prompts come in. Instead of figuring out how to describe your problem in the moment (when your executive function is at its lowest), you paste a prompt that's already engineered for that exact situation.
9 pre-engineered prompts for 9 ADHD situations.
Custom Instructions make ChatGPT understand you. These prompts tell it exactly what to do when you're stuck.
